The Roommate: The Teenage Interpretation of "Psychological Thriller"

The Roommate (MA 15+)
Director: Christian E. Christiansen
Cast: Minka Kelly, Leighton Meester.
TheRoomatePoster.jpgThe Roommate is a psychological thriller starring Minka Kelly as Sara who moves into her college dormitory and finds herself sharing a room to an initially charming and helpful young roommate, Rebecca, played by Gossip Girl’s Leighton Meester. The obvious conclusion one can gather even prior to viewing the film is this particular roommate is like no other . Meester plays the psychopath roommate who constantly stalks and threatens anyone and everyone that attempts to come in between her friendship with Sara (Kelly) or perhaps troubles Sara in any way. Rebecca finds herself going through extreme lengths in order to ensure such a friendship isn’t hindered.

The film presents itself as a thriller to borderline horror like no other, however, there is no presence of bloody or gruesome images throughout. Most is left to the imagination. The film plays on one’s mind and emotions, for example, there's a scene depicting Rebecca attempting to compellingly remove a friend’s belly ring, creating a cringe-worthy moment, without the actual scene of her carrying out the task being shown.
Personally, i found this film slightly thrilling and entertaining with many exhilarating moments left open to the imagination.

Verdict: If you're a die-hard fan of the Final Destination and Scream franchise, then I guarantee you will thoroughly enjoy this film. Frankly, this film falls short in comparison to pioneering horror flicks, rather the film is more accustomed to purely being a psychological thriller, with added celebrity status.

6.5 out of 10 stars.
